Decluttering 101: A simple, foolproof method

Let's talk simple decluttering.

If you really want to declutter your space but you have the kids at home with you, you need to find a way to do it that isn't too complicated.

If you jump in without a simple method to follow, the house will just seem like it's getting even messier.

If you plan it out in too much detail, you'll never actually get started on the task itself.

If you get interrupted by the kids constantly, the whole thing will just feel too overwhelming!

You need a decluttering method that's simple, fast, and easy to remember.

Here's how I do it.

Tools Required:

  • Rubbish bag
  • Donate bag
  • Large empty space nearby (I use the floor, you can also use a table or a bed)
  • Timer (I use the one on my iPhone, oven timer will work too)
Method:
  • Set your timer for 15 minutes.
  • Take everything out of the space you need to declutter one piece at a time (don't just dump it all out).
  • Sort items as you go into piles on the floor / table / bed
  • Throw rubbish into the bag as you go
  • Put donation items straight into the bag as you go - don't mix the bags up!
  • Put everything else back where it belongs

Done! 6 steps. Simple, fast, easy to remember.

What if you don't finish in 15 minutes?
If your task takes longer than 15 minutes, you have 2 options:

  • Reset your timer and keep going, or
  • Throw away the rubbish bag, tie up the donate bag and put it in the boot of your car, and put everything else back into the space. You can come back & start again when you have another 15 minutes to spare.

It doesn't matter if it takes more than one attempt. With each 15 minute turn, the space gets more organised than it was before.

Give it a try and let me know how you go!
