If I had to pick one reason getting organised can be difficult, it’s this:
People are too busy.
Our work lives are busy, our home lives are busy and our social lives are busy - it never ends!
Have you ever:
- Skipped one household chore in order to free up time to complete another one?
- Used paper plates at dinner to cut down on doing the dishes?
- Found yourself awake at 1am, exhausted, but not wanting to go to bed because you just need an hour or two to do something you want to do, not have to do?
You are absolutely not alone..
One thing I see a lot of us struggle with is the feeling that we have way too much to do and not enough time to do it in.
Now there’s a lot of great advice out there to help with the ‘busy factor’: simplify your life, stop saying yes to social commitments, just leave the housework because it’ll be there tomorrow..
I do think that advice has it’s place, but it’s not always easy to do those things (and often causes more stress and icky feelings when you try to do them).
Want to know the advice I give my clients when they need to cut down on the ‘busy factor’?
I say this:
Look for an easier way.
There is often an easier or faster way to do something than the way you were shown originally. This idea can apply to anything, from asking your butcher to cut your meat for you (saves a good 10 minutes cooking time), to looking at new technology options.
These days, you can rent movies over the internet and save a trip to the DVD shop. You can order your groceries online and have them packed and ready to take home when you swing by the supermarket after work. You can even get them home delivered!
And you can give up vacuuming. Look at this baby by Robomaid. I’m in love:
Actually, you will need to lift that finger to set the timer or push the start button on the remote. But I’m sure you can cope with that given the time you will save by never vacuuming again.
Doesn’t that sound good? Let’s say it again.
Never vacuum again.
It’s like the Jetsons housekeeper robot (what was her name?!?), but this one is smaller with less attitude ;)
It’s like having a cleaner come in but instead of paying $15 each week (according to my Google search) for a half hr of vacuuming (and the floor is messy again 2 days later), it’s like you only don’t even pay half of that and can have clean floors with no effort.
My floors need vacuuming 3 times a week, so over a year that works out to be just under $2 per vacuum. Every cup of coffee I have ever bought has cost more than that.
So you save time, save money, and save your sanity. Use your old vacuuming time to work on something else, or hey, just relax...
